Foundation Announces Scholarship Recipients
The Paul M. Gervais memorial scholarship committee is pleased to announce that two scholarships are being awarded to Burncoat High School seniors Julia K. Walles and Matthew J. Abraham.
Established in May of 2013 in partnership with the Worcester Educational Development Foundation, Inc. (WEDF), the Paul M. Gervais memorial scholarship was founded in memory of a well-known and admired patron of the arts. Paul’s goal was to serve the community, fostering a love of music and supporting talent for countless promising musicians. Paul’s family, friends, and colleagues in the music community wish to have his legacy of support for the arts continue. This memorial scholarship will assist young musicians to access and to develop their gift of music as well as supporting additional music endeavors in central Massachusetts.
Julia’s notable musical achievements include: member of Burncoat High School’s Quadrivium Select Chorus, singing back up for artists Kenny Rodgers and Lynda Davis, singing the “Star Spangled Banner” at the Massachusetts State House, and singing with Worcester’s Salisbury Singers.
Matthew’s musical achievements include: member of Burncoat High School’s Honors Spring Quartet, violinist for Burncoat High School’s Jazz Quartet, performed with the Select Chorus, member of the Central District Orchestra for the past three years, and has
participated in many out of school programs including Worcester’s Joy of Music Center Orchestra.
Julia will be continuing her education at Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware and Matthew at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. The WEDF’s Board of Directors and the Gervais family extend their best wishes to these exemplary students in their future endeavors.
